Athletic training aides like Zachary Zutler are among the first to observe medical professionals provide support for college athletes. If a player has an upset stomach or ankle pain when coming off the field, athletic trainers are often the first one they look for, and Zutler has worked to learn the trainers’ craft. His hard work behind the scenes helps athletic trainers excel at the highest level of Division I football.
“We have to be ready on the fly and get our equipment and crew in motion to support the team effectively and meet the needs of the players, the coaches, and the staff.”
Unlike many medical professionals who see patients only when they’re injured or ill, Zutler builds lasting relationships with his players. He values the opportunity to be a part of their journey, from rehab and recovery to getting back on the field and, for some, even being drafted into the NFL. A pre-med student, when he’s not on the field or in the classroom, Zutler shadows doctors in their clinical work and surgeries, explores clinical medicine, and studies orthopedic care. He plans to work as a team physician after finishing medical school (maybe even at the University of Georgia).
