Ana Escamilla has a love for the game, no matter the sport.
As an intern in the sports communication department at the University of Georgia Athletic Association, she takes pride in supporting athletes across the board. It’s a chance to go behind the scenes and support something bigger than herself.
Throughout football season, she sets up regular press conferences with Coach Kirby Smart and Georgia Bulldogs football players. On Saturdays, she’ll spend all day at Sanford Stadium, working with reporters and visitors like NFL scouts.
She might cover a women’s soccer game on Thursday, keeping statistics for the team. The next day, she could be attending a high school football game and writing post-game articles. Over the weekend, she can be found live tweeting and Instagramming for equestrian. And somehow, she’s also attending swim and dive meets, men’s basketball games, and men’s tennis matches.
With sports, everyone’s having a good time, and you don’t even notice that you’re with people you’d never normally talk to.

Each week is a little different, and the pace tends to be a whirlwind, but Escamilla wouldn’t have it any other way.
“There are just so few things in life that bring so many people together,” Escamilla says. “With sports, everyone’s having a good time, and you don’t even notice that you’re with people you’d never normally talk to. You’re cheering for the same thing, and you’re working toward the same goal: being a fan, supporting a team.”
And she’s just getting started.
“Last year, I tried to dip my toe into everything and stay busy the whole calendar year because I loved working so much,” Escamilla says. “I got to learn who does what in every sport, and I really enjoyed getting to experience the different roles that sports communication plays for each sport.”
As a bonus, Escamilla’s role with UGA Athletics supports her academic and professional goals. Her internship fulfills the university’s experiential learning requirement and fits nicely with her sports media certificate program.
“Coming into college out of high school, I knew I wanted to work in sports,” she says. “The main focus was getting to be in a program that had what I wanted to study and was where I could grow into a job.”
