Before joining the Georgia Bulldogs—back when he was setting Georgia high school football records in Rabun County—Gunner Stockton had a tradition with his teammates.

“During the season, we’d watch (replay) film on Sundays,” he says, “and, heck, everybody would be in their camo.”

It was more than a fashion statement.

“As soon as the film session would get out,” he says, “we’d all go hunting.”

That hobby, setting off into the North Georgia woods and waiting for the right opportunity, has been an asset for Stockton. As a backup quarterback, he has waited patiently for his turn to play.

As a high school quarterback, Stockton set state records in career passing touchdowns, passing yards, and rushing touchdowns. But at the next level, Stockton has had few chances to accrue any stats.

But he hasn’t lost sight of his role.

I think you can lead by your actions by just living the right way and doing the right thing.

“The way I contribute to the team is just being ready,” he says. “You’ve got to wait your turn and make the most out of your opportunities.”

He certainly did that in the 2023 Orange Bowl. With Georgia up 42-3 against the Seminoles, Stockton got the nod to start the second half.

On 10 attempts, he connected with receivers six times for 96 yards and two touchdowns. He also gained 46 rushing yards. Until that point, he had only nine passing attempts as a Bulldog.

Now that’s making the most of an opportunity.

With a new season underway, Stockton continues to do what he can to earn the trust of coaches and teammates for whenever his number is called.

“I’m not as vocal as some guys,” he says. “I think you can lead by your actions by just living the right way and doing the right thing.”

He carries that mindset into the classroom, earning SEC Honor Roll Distinction in Fall 2022.

Stockton studies sport management at the Mary Frances Early College of Education, which prepares students for careers in the sports industry. With plenty of experience playing sports, Stockton is learning about the big picture of the industry that makes it all happen. That includes studying the micro- and macroeconomics of the sports industry and reviewing legal case studies to learn how sports organizations work.

Beyond campus, Stockton is learning a little about running a business through DGD Outdoors. It’s a player-run operation that promotes outdoor activities with fellow players and fans.

In his own time, he keeps a version of his high school tradition alive. Every Sunday, he says, he meets up with his granddad, Joe Dinkins, to go hunting. It’s a chance to set out once again and find a way to be rewarded for his patience.
